An excavator standing still costs far more per day than any part that stopped it. Yet most unplanned downtime traces back to a small, cheap, entirely predictable component.
The cheap parts cause the expensive stops
Across CAT, Komatsu, Volvo, Hyundai and Doosan fleets, the parts that most often halt work are filters, hydraulic hoses and undercarriage wear items. None of them are expensive. All of them are consumable and all of them are predictable, which makes them the easiest downtime to design out.
Filters deserve particular attention in Saudi conditions. Airborne dust loads air and cabin filters far faster than a temperate-climate service interval assumes. Running a clogged air filter does not simply reduce performance — it pulls unfiltered air past the element and into the engine.
Stock by consequence, not by price
The useful question is not what a part costs but what its absence costs. A practical way to divide a fleet's parts:
- Always on the shelf. Air, oil, fuel and hydraulic filters; water separators; common hoses and seals. Cheap, consumed on a schedule, and each capable of stopping a machine.
- Ordered against a plan. Undercarriage components and ground engaging tools. These wear visibly, so replacement can be forecast from inspection rather than discovered on a breakdown.
- Ordered on demand. Major engine, hydraulic and electrical assemblies, where holding stock ties up capital against a low probability.
Lead time is part of the specification
A part that arrives in six weeks is not the same part as one that arrives in three days, no matter what the catalogue says. Before committing to a machine or a supplier, ask what genuinely sits in the country, what is ordered in, and what the realistic delivery is — not the best case.
Record the machine, not just the part
Most mis-ordered parts come from an incomplete machine reference. Serial number, model variant and year decide fitment far more often than the model name. Keeping a simple register of your fleet's serial numbers turns every future order from a guess into a lookup.
